12pm-late, May 19th-27th

Wednesday 23rd May 7pm-12am WAKE UP Party!

FREE!

‘Wake Up and Wait for the Sun to Rise explores diverse forms of contemporary collaborative practice. It is also the keynote project for the 2012 Next Wave Festival. Five young and emerging artist collectives will develop a variety of new artist-driven social spaces that encourage us to imagine new possibilities for being together. The project will infiltrate all corners of the gallery, turning it into home base for Festival-fans as they journey throughout Melbourne experiencing the next wave of Australian artists.’ - West Space

As a part of Wake Up, Tape Projects members Zoe Scoglio, Michael Prior, Caroline Anderson and Matthew O’Shannessy have developed Becoming Carol Brown. Step on set and cast yourself into the oblique melodrama that is the party within. Becoming Carol Brown is a nine part mini-series which upholsters Carol’s mental furniture over the nine days of the Next Wave Festival.

In Spring of 2009, Carol Brown witnessed a puzzling change within herself. The partitions of her mind fell away and she could no longer tell where she ended and the next person began. She felt connected beyond the internet’s wildest dreams and a carpet of imaginary solutions rolled out beneath her.

Wake Up will also feature works by Applespiel, Tully Arnot & Charles Dennington, Claire Finneran & Hossein Ghaemi, and Lucky PDF.

Lunacy - Jan Svankmajer, Czech Republic, 2008, 120min.

The continually inventive Czech animator/filmmaker Svankmajer is still producing excellent films after a career that spans more than 40 years. This film sees him combining his trademark stop-motion meat puppetry with live action hijinks. The plot of Lunacy revolves around a young traveller, Jean, who finds himself in a debauched asylum run by the sinister Marquis, where perverse sex rites are par for the course. Jean meets a young nurse who claims she is being held captive, and they conspire to free the real director and staff of the clinic locked in the basement. This, it turns out, is a mistake…

Tape Projects
1/81 Bouverie St
Carlton VIC

Odious Pegboard #4

FREE!

New fortnightly free cinema focusing on the obscure, the obtuse, the obscene and the unseen, programmed by Dominique Czapla.

Martin - George Romero, USA, 1976, 95min.
HE COULD BE THE BOY NEXT DOOR!

Martin (John Amplas) is another very confused young man. A shy teenager living in a desolate suburban wasteland, he’s convinced that he’s an 84-year-old vampire, a situation not helped by his hostile, elderly, live-in uncle, who harbours delusions of being a vampire slayer. Are they both crazy? Probably. Romero is better known as director of the Living Dead series, but has a large body of work that sadly doesn’t get the same amount of screen time (eg. The Crazies, Monkey Shines). Despite its low budget, Martin is considered by some to be Romero’s best work. Weirdly, this is not the only film to equate vampirism with mental illness (see also: Vampire’s Kiss, Brain Damage).

The Hour of The Wolf - Ingmar Bergman, Sweden, 1968, 90min.

“The Hour of the Wolf is the hour between night and dawn. It is the hour when most people die, when sleep is deepest, when nightmares are most real. It is the hour when the sleepless are haunted by their deepest fear, when ghosts and demons are most powerful. The Hour of the Wolf is also the hour when most children are born.”
There you have it. Billed as Ingmar Bergman’s only horror film, The Hour Of The Wolf focuses on an egocentric artist who begins to suffer from bizarre and disturbing visions while spending the summer in seclusion with his wife. Max Von Sydow is given the opportunity to go suitably loopy, wear makeup, attack children, etc.

Tape Projects
1/81 Bouverie St
Carlton VIC

Time Pressure

Santa Sangre - Alejandro Jodorowsky, Mexico, 1989, 123min.

Jodorowsky’s work generally defies convention but Dios Mio! - how to describe this film? Inhabiting a nightmare landscape somewhere between Hitchcock and Fellini, Santa Sangre contains Mexican cults worshipping schoolgirl amputees, an elephant’s funeral procession, a coke-fuelled excursion to the slums, a graveyard of living dead brides and a confused young man’s relationship with his mother. And that’s barely scraping the surface. Grotesque, highly original, and ultimately poetic.

Tape Projects
1/81 Bouverie St
Carlton VIC

TAPR Podcast - Dale Gorfinkel

FREE!

New fortnightly free cinema focusing on the obscure, the obtuse, the obscene and the unseen. Programmed by Dominique Czapla. First up is a GIALLO DOUBLE BILL.

Amer and The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh.

For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure, welcome to the world of giallos: lurid and stylistic thrillers exported from Italy in the 1960’s and 70’s, marginally more reputable precursors to the modern slasher, most notable for their elaborate camerawork, intense soundtracks, excessive bloodletting, and their unwillingness to ever sacrifice style for coherence (often these movies focus all efforts on creating a foreboding atmosphere while basic flaws in logic and continuity ensure that they make virtually no sense). The word giallo is Italian for “yellow” and refers to cheap paperback mystery novels with trademark yellow covers, which provided the basis for the first of these films.

Amer – Hélène Cattet/Bruno Forzani, France, 2009, 90min.

“A voluptuous wallow in recycled psychosexual kitsch” - Stephen Holden, New York Times

This French homage/ re-invention/ rip-off of the giallo tradition (depending on your point of view) went virtually unseen in Australia on its 2009 release. Kind of an art-giallo, Amer deals with three key moments in a girl’s life, all of them sensual, as she grows into adulthood. Her carnal search swaying between reality and coloured fantasies gradually becomes more and more oppressive. Amer is visually striking and comes complete with a soundtrack of great cuts pilfered liberally from giallos of the past, featuring such luminaries as Ennio Morricone and Stelvio Cipriani.

The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh – Sergio Martino, Italy, 1971, 96min.

“Your vice is a room locked from the inside and only I have the key.”

Though Dario Argento (Suspiria, Profondo Rosso) is the name that became synonymous with giallo for most Western audiences, there was a lot more going on in the movement than just a one-man show. Sergio Martino directed several quality giallos in the early 70’s, just a small part of a very prolific and diverse career that ranged from slapstick comedy to cannibal exploitation fare. Strange Vice is the tale of Julie (Edwige Fenech), a beautiful ambassador’s wife with some serious man trouble. Having to choose between a host of would-be lovers in her life, she also has to contend with the ostensible fact that one of her suitors is a razor-wielding maniac who has her in his sights. High bodycount, nudity, prototypical giallo.

This fortnight by pure coincidence draws a tenuous Newcastle connection, featuring both present and ex-residents of that city.

These shows drawn upon some of the most reclusive of Melbourne based sound makers. Most of those involved play very rarely, some leaving their bedrooms only to feed their cats or to collect more rubbish from the streets.
David Palliser

www.davidpalliser.com

David’s practice as a visual artist, mainly painting, has been converging over many years with his development in improvised music. The 2 ways of working rely on an intuitive response to either other sounds or space and colour possibilities. He comes from the school of the ad hoc. Make something from hopeless case material, or at least find a space in which these sounds can exist. His music will be performed in the traditional broken barn style.

Noel St Cosmos (Wellington, NZ) & Alice Hui Sheng Chang

noelstcosmos.wordpress.com

Originally immersed in avant-garde theatre and dance, Noel St Cosmos cut his teeth in New Zealand improvised music, eventually screaming and hollering along with the likes of Tetuzi Akiyama, Mats Gustafsson and Phil Minton. He has studied Hindustani music in Varanasi, regularly performs Early Music, sings in noise bands, improvised orchestras and Javanese gamelan, and has performed in the US, UK, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Australia and New Zealand.

www.huishengchang.com

Alice Hui-Sheng Chang’s work focus solely on developing extended vocal technique as a means for improvisation and communication. Her vocal explorations include sound from varying tension of physical vocal parts, driving air into alternative passages and vibration of calls and breath. The physical sound produced by a mouth and throat organism, under no computer manipulation, is not only for the artist to be fully involved during performance, but also to challenge the listener with an intimate relationship while receiving. The results of these explorations create a delicate world of primal and vulnerable soundscapes.

$5 suggested donation

A RAY ARRAY examines forms of visual and aural interference: from the failure of a message to be discernable, sudden interruptions, visual disturbance, the interaction of 2 sound signals, instability, and optical effects. Structured like a collection of short stories, the work is composed of 16 video chapters that explore the subject of interference using simple sets, everyday objects, and subtle special effects. A RAY ARRAY features a soundtrack created by Lucky Dragons.

http://sarahrara.com/a-ray-array

Also featuring live music performances by:

Northlands - solo dream synth and vocal drift by Esther, of the Melbourne duo Superstar.

House Plants - matching synthesizer duo of Sarah Rara & Tim Coster, some kind of exploratory counterpoint & arpeggios.

7pm early start with music first, and then video once it’s dark enough.

Tape Projects
1/81 Bouverie St
Carlton VIC

Lazy slum was a cross-disciplinary experiment in what happens when you build a society from scratch. Think Lord of the Flies meets Better Homes and Gardens. Dystopian community meets tribal display home.

Over three days a game unfurled where audience and artists alike were governed by the rules and roles of this fleeting micro community. Lazy slum was the result of an exchange program between Tape Projects and Hobart-based initiative Six a.
